The Materials – Whakato

Materials we use

At Whakato, every material choice is made with care and intention. When existing options fell short of our standards for comfort, quality, and respect for both the environment and animals, we chose to work directly with farmers, weavers, and makers to build new supply chains from the ground up. In smaller areas such as trims, the ecosystem is still evolving, and while solutions are limited, we remain conscious of these gaps and committed to improving them with every collection.

Sustainable Fabrics

Our fabrics are grown, spun, and woven with respect for the land and the people behind them. We work primarily with natural, biodegradable fibres sourced directly from farmers and weavers. By staying close to the origin, we ensure traceability, fair practices, and long-lasting quality.

Coconut Buttons

Our buttons are made from discarded coconut shells, a natural by-product that would otherwise go to waste. Each button is shaped and finished by skilled makers, giving subtle variations that reflect its handmade nature. Durable, biodegradable, and thoughtful by design.

NO Fusing or Chemicals

We avoid synthetic fusing and harsh chemical finishes in our garments. Instead, structure and form are achieved through thoughtful pattern-making and skilled tailoring. This keeps the fabric breathable, skin-friendly, and easier to return to the earth.

Vegetable Dyes

Our colours come from plant-based dyes derived from roots, leaves, bark, and flowers. These dyes are processed using low-impact methods that are gentle on both the wearer and the environment. The resulting shades are soft, nuanced, and evolve beautifully over time.

Sewing Thread

We use GOTS certified organic cotton sewing threads for strength, longevity, and compatibility with our fabrics. Wherever possible, threads are selected to ensure the garment remains largely biodegradable at the end of its life. Every stitch is placed to endure wear, repair, and reuse.
